Outside, a storm is raging. A deluge falls in heavy thuds on the scorched earth, and a flash of lightning strikes way off in the distance. The winds of change are howling all around us. There is no point in getting whipped up in the wild weather. What would there be to gain? The forces of nature can be cruel when we are not equipped to deal with them. We can be left exposed. The tempest can cause us to become unbalanced, forcing us to seek refuge.

It’s understandable to hunker down for a while, waiting for the storm to pass. There is nowhere else to be. This requires the art of patience. At any moment, the atmosphere could change, and blue skies appear. Until then, rest is required in order to garner strength for the next part of the journey. We can simply observe what is going on outside and not get involved in it.

Those that have gained a level of self-mastery know that there is no point in trying to change something that cannot be controlled. When it is outside of our circle of concern, we must come back to ourselves and work out what matters most to us. The noise and hullabaloo of the exterior can be distracting. However, we can still find peace and quiet within when we are still.

Those that fight against the storm may find that they waste valuable energy on futile actions. Shouting into the squall has little effect. It may provide catharsis but, ultimately, it is fruitless. Anger does need to be vented sometimes though, in healthy ways, and not directed at one another. We do not need to step into the tumult. When we are calm and our thoughts and emotions are steady, we are perceived as the voice of reason.

There is nothing wrong with staying in the safety of our cave for a while. Transformation occurs when we make time to integrate our experiences. When we are in harmony with ourselves, we know instinctively when it is time to move again. Embracing this time of renewal is not a sign of weakness but is a testament to our wisdom as we await the return of brighter times and a fresh beginning on the horizon.
