The picture depicts a woman trapped in an abandoned house. She remains frozen in place, terrified due to the terrible circumstance that she finds herself in. Somewhat resigned to her fate, she doesn’t cry out or make any attempt to escape, despite there being a clear way out. If she could just loosen her bindings and remove the blindfold, she would see the exit route through the window. Her freedom is only a short distance away.

We all go through tough times when fear takes over and the freeze mechanism kicks in. The walls start closing in on us and we become lethargic with inaction. Despondency wriggles its way into our minds and prevents us from achieving anything meaningful. It’s as if have been captured by some unseen force that leaves us feeling paralysed. It seems that there is no way out of the situation and yet we become numb to it and accept that we can’t move on.

This is perfectly natural. In these moments, we must trust that there is always a way out. It requires small actions in order to build momentum. A single completed task can make all the difference. Pretty soon, we find that the rope around our wrists starts to relax. We can then remove the blindfold that has occluded our vision and see with clear sight. Suddenly, opportunities to gain freedom from our constraints present themselves to us. We find the courage to shake off the feelings of dread. We are emboldened as the gloom lifts.

We may have been hidden away for some time, not realising that the key to our own emancipation was in our hands all along. The window to the open world is unlocked. As we climb out from our prison, there may be some lingering grey mist but the further away we get from our captivity, the better we feel. A new sense of positivity arises when we overcome our fear. By facing these challenges, we become more resilient and able to deal with the world. This reminds us that, like the figure in the abandoned house, we can always find the strength to free ourselves from the grip of fear and seize the opportunities that await us.
