Lazy Lioness

There is a secret that isn’t told to many. It is one that is known to those that are bristling with creativity. They understand the benefit of laziness – doing little yet accomplishing much. Pressure and strain is not the way. Vigorous activity is not the path. Rest is the medicine. It is the fuel for productivity.

The paradox is that, in our sloth, we do that which is the most fun intensely. We pick up our pens or our brushes, we generate bold ideas. Our imaginings spill out onto the page or the canvas and we fill our world with meaning and bright colours.

We could sit comfortably or lie under a blanket. There is always the opportunity to do something with our hands. We could knit or make jewellery. We could draw or just doodle. Self-expression is exactly what is required. When we have finished with our craft, there are others around us that will be amazed at our progress. It doesn’t take as long as we think to master an art. In those moments when we are settled, it’s the best time to begin our play. It doesn’t feel like work, no way.

This is where our passions infuse into our daily lives and we can gain appreciation for what we have done. Others may not see it the same, they may remonstrate and mock us for our laziness. As they buzz about, completing task after task, they miss out on the joy that is made when we slow down. They may never birth ideas to change their existence. They may never take the time to dream the impossible dream and bring it to life. They may never pick up an unexpected skill or experiment with a new hobby.

Rest vitalises creation. It replenishes the internal batteries and gets us prepared to face the outside world. You have permission to laze like a lioness in the sun. Take a load off, take a break and see what you can make. Don’t punish yourself for this or listen to anyone else’s jibes, you now know the secret. It will make you feel alive.
