The Root Chakra is all about our connection to our physical reality and its element is earth. It is the energy centre that grounds us in the reality that we find ourselves in. Fear destabilises this Chakra, so getting to a place where we feel safe and secure in our environment is paramount to ensuring the health and vitality of this energy point. This is where we connect to our planet and being imbalanced in this area can lead to a number of unpleasant side effects. Our Kundalini is stored here, it is where the serpent sleeps waiting to be awoken. It is no mistake that people wishing to control a population will deliberately target this area. Destabilising this Chakra is easy to do through fear.

If the outward reality is portrayed as threatening and unsafe, then you can manipulate people to do a whole host of things so that they attempt to regain their sense of safety. Whilst many of these will be illusory tactics to achieve control of our environment, a metaphysical band-aid so to speak, as the fear will still be present underneath the surface. The fear of death being one of the biggest players in the human game. Once you have understood this, then you’ll know exactly why Hitler used the inverted Swastika symbol (which represents a Chakra wheel) on top of a red background. Achieving freedom from the fear of death is one of the ways to disconnect any outside influences from being able to destabilise this Chakra.

An overactive Root Chakra can lead to obesity, greed, sluggishness, constipation, being too much in the comfort zone, having rigid boundaries and hoarding; while under-activity can lead to fear, diarrhoea, having porous boundaries, recklessness, feelings of distrust, being underweight, disconnected to the planet and not at home in one’s skin. A balanced Root leads to vitality, health, physical and mental stability and feelings of belonging.

Eating red apples, cherries, red onions, red lentils, beetroot, raspberries, watermelon, strawberries and tomatoes, drinking pomegranate, tomato or cranberry juice, wearing red clothing and scents of ginger, patchouli, cypress, sandalwood, white fir, vetiver and cedarwood can help to balance the Root Chakra.

Chanting the vowel sound “UH” at the bottom of your register (the lowest notes that you can comfortably manage), so that you feel the vibration in the pelvis region will help to stabilise this Chakra. As you progress through the Chakras, the notes that you’ll be using will get incrementally higher in pitch.
