This is the seat of our personal power. It is the solar fire that drives us onwards with will and intention. It is where our determination arises and burns in the searing cauldron of the abdomen. Our strength of character comes from this area, our discipline or lack of it. The way that we assert ourselves in the world radiates from this power point. Are you a leader or a follower? Are you too eager to please others? Are you a doormat? Are you too overbearing? Do you let others take responsibility for things that you should be doing? Do you overcommit?

Having strength in this Chakra determines how you respond to challenges in this world. When faced with difficulties are you resilient in the face of adversity or do you crumble? There is no judgement here, it is simply to point out that this energy centre may need some care, attention and most importantly, healing.

Our current hierarchical model of society creates feelings of disempowerment and this is not without design. From an early age, we are told to obey,  not question authority and follow the rules unflinchingly. This is disastrous for the Solar Plexus Chakra as it dims our light. If anything it is completely against the principle of knowing oneself, it is blind compliance and kowtowing to a religion, government, job, school or any other fictitious man-made authority system. In order to live a life with confidence and strength, a healthy disrespect for all institutions that require unquestioning faith is required.

An overactive Solar Plexus Chakra can lead to domineering behaviour, control issues, manipulation, competitiveness, arrogance and anger; while under-activity can lead to poor self esteem, indecisiveness, lack of confidence, apathy, addictions, victimhood, stuck feelings and pessimism. A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra affords confidence, healthy self-esteem, self-control, efficiency, attention to detail, spontaneity, playfulness, humour, responsibility and a warm personality.

Eating bananas, lemons, pineapple, chick peas, yellow peppers, yellow lentils, sweetcorn, yellow pears and drinking banana smoothies or lemon juice, wearing yellow clothing and scents of lemon, ylang ylang, basil, grapefruit, clove, ginger and orange can help to balance the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Chanting the vowel sound “OH”, so that you feel the vibration just above the navel will help to stabilise this Chakra.
