GHWYC by Stealth Tactic
These beautifully-formed funky electronic bar groove DJ sets are heavily inspired by a CD I picked up in Sydney back in 2008 – Groove Armada’s Back To Mine mix. They’re perfect for lounging around and loafing about. Part I is filled with tracks from the Star Creature Universal Vibrations label. Part II is an eclectic mix of laid-back tunes, with a splash of offbeat pop, quirky indie from Animal Collective & Tame Impala, ending with a cracking Orbital track. Part III delves further into diversity with smooth Hip-Hop, Funk, R&B, and Electronica. It’s a real joy to listen to back-to-back and ideal for when you’ve got a vaporizer in hand.
Star Creature are the absolute best in class for modern funk music. They have an absolutely huge back-catalogue of tunes to make you boogie. The vibe is retro and has a distinctly eighties feel. It’s like pretending to play Outrun down the Florida strip. There’s a sultry soul-tinged pop sheen to their sparkly pristinely-produced sounds. Big bouncing basslines baby and crunchy squeaking synths. Sometimes jazzy, always snazzy. Hot as a raging inferno, cool as a summer breeze. Totally cosmic.
Listen: Minute Papillon EP, Mirror Life.
These prolific eclectic musicologists span genres like it’s nothing. Much of what they do resembles an expert jam band wigging out. It has a live feel but it’s supremely polished. You’re never quite sure where it’s going and then wham! They floor you with their technical genius. They’ve even turned their hand to otherworldly meditation music on the absolutely essential Peace album. A must buy in our opinion. It’s funkypoppyjazzypsychedelicsymphonicrock, maybe? Super gorgeous.
